Minutes 1-13

Minutes
January 13, 2008
Hill-Kitt Hall Council

Present: Tyler Ochsner (Area Coordinator), Adrian Swanson (President), Anna Sannes (Vice President), Kim Spitzfaden (Senator), Aaron Oseland (floor rep), Martin Shedd (corridor rep), Andrew Watt (corridor rep)
Latefaces: Bryan Haimes (the great), Jeska Fields (Staff Liason, Interim SHC), Lisa York (Treasurer)
Absent: Erin Kelly (recorder), Hannah Adamson (corridor rep), Alan Richardson Hohn (corridor rep)
Present in our hearts: Mike Potter and Erin Armstrong

I. Erin/ Anna Story Time
Erin/Anna Story Time will return in full swing after Interim
II. Call to Order
III. Roll Call
IV. Minutes
approved
V. Old Business
a. Shirts, tabling, ordering
Tabling seemed to go well. We have sold 23 shirts, and once Tyler and Kim buy theirs, we’ll have the 25 we need to keep our price the same. We will table again this week but at a later time, 7-9. Look out for an e-mail to sign up for times.
b. January event final details
i. Charlie Potts okayed a Mike Potter theme birthday party; we don’t really need to ask Mike. To quote Mr. Potts, “If he doesn’t like it, he can suck it up.” He seemed to think it was a very good idea.
ii. Andrew pointed out that a lot of people in Kitt don’t know Mike Potter. Is there a way we can combine this with other people or some other event? Kim and Bryan remind us that January 24th is also the saddest day of the year, so we could do something with that.
iii. Bryan has sent a message to Mike Potter, but has not received a response yet. We’re not sure if he has access to e-mail, but we’re doing what we can.
iv. We’re going to do a different version of pin the tail on the donkey. Adrian and Bryan are going to go to Cub to look for a piñata, which Tyler said we are allowed to do as long as we keep it away from the windows and those that aren't participating stay away from it.
v. Music- After thinking about a Mariachi band, we decide to ask the first-year jazz combo if they’ll play. Andrew will ask them if they’ll do it for free. The only issue is if they can be quiet enough that we can still have conversations and games in the lounge. In exchange for their playing, we might give them some pizzas. We will definitely do lots of advertising for them.
vi. We will bring out all of the games from behind the front desk.
vii. Mike Potter fun fact of the day- Everyone is going to create a Mike Potter fun face to send to Adrian. We will post one Mike Potter fact each day leading up to the party, starting on Sunday.
viii. We determine that the birthday party is for Mike Potter, but the whole week is Mike Potter Appreciation Week. We will have a big card sitting at the front desk all week and at the party for people to sign. Also, we will have supplies to make little cards at the party. We can use markers from the front desk and paper from the Ytterboe supply room. All of this will be presented to Mike on his first meeting back. If he is still unhappy, Adrian will play his cello and make everything better.
ix. Food and drinks- We will get a sheet cake and a bunch of pop from Cub. Pop is on sale…Yay!!
x. Bryan, Kim, and Anna will make banners and posters…really big ones.

VI. New Business
a. Talk about Shoot ‘Em Up
VII. Officers’ Reports
Senator
The senate took a tour of the new science center, which was really cool. The offices in there will be arranged in cloves of four, intermixing the different departments (ie biology with physics with chemistry with math all in one area). There are lots of windows, in both the classrooms and the labs, with great views of the campus. Hopefully this sunlight will cut down on energy used for other lights. There is a neat configuration to the labs, where they each have three walls and there is an open connection between them where people can congregate at a computer or a desk and work together.
SAC has tickets for G. Love and Special Sauce for just $10. The concert is Wednesday the 16th at First Ave. Find your own transportation. They are also selling tickets to go ice skating at the depot for Wednesday the 17th. Tickets are $10 and skating will be from 7-9. SAC is hosting a lip synching contest on the 23rd in the Pause. Come!
The PAC coordinator has resigned, so SGA taking applications from people currently on PAC.
MLK Jr. weekend is this one. DCC is hosting a bunch of events correlating with that.
Kim got two hole-in-one’s at mini golf! Bryan got a hole-in-one on one of the really tricky ones that went down the stairs. Congrats y’all!

        1. No Time Limit, but the contest will be timed for bragging rights

        2. JC's and Residents will eat in rounds

          • residents first, staff second

      • Pies are messy and we don't want to be cleaning up all night. We need Mess Protectors!

        • Garbage Bag Dressing Gowns (ok, Erin K. has been reading too much Victorian Literature). Basically we are going to force our contestant's heads through garbage bags.

          • Anna claims that this forcing their heads through makes a more protective covering

          • Anna is the Pie Eating Contest Guru

        • Floor Protectors of some kind.

        • We will requisition some garbage bags

        • We will once again make use of the long folding tables in the Blue Lounge

      • Adrian will MC

      • Andrew, Lisa, Hannah, and the Erins (Erin K. and Erin A.) will be the Referees

        • Referees are supposed to dress up in a silly fashion

        • Adrian want the referees to speak in British Accents

      • We vote to approve $50-60 to buy a Plaque to put the Contest Winner's name on

    • Appreciation Days Wrap Up

      • Cards went under the door the previous night

      • There were really cool signs made by Anna and Erin A.

    • Hallwear

      • We look at a total of 10 designs

        • We vote not to burn Anna and Erin's design

        • Through a process of elimination too complicated to follow we look at all the designs and reject the following:

        1. Stitsworth is my homeboy—not enough respect for the VP pf the college

        2. Hill-Kitt in a box—not an ok reference

        3. Better than a White T-Shirt—it's been done

        4. Hill and a Kitten—it's probably not going to sell to guys

        5. Hill-Kitt/Cool S***—no expletives allowed

        6. Intervisitation Encouraged—Apparently Res. Life does not take Intervisitation jokes well.

        7. What the Hill.../Kitt—The joke's not appropriate...again

        • The following designs make it through to the preliminary voting round

          1. Front: Beverly Hill-Kitt Back:That's Where I Want to Be

            • We like the song

            • it's a good solid choice

          1. Front: Hill-Kitt 07-08 Back Silhouette of Hill-Kitt with “All Quiet on the Western Front”

            • Hill-Kitt is not technically the westernmost dorm (Ytterboe is)

            • If it's executed well this design could be very, very cool

          1. Front: Picture of a Car driving away from the Hill-Kitt Sign “Don't need to walk/Got a Pimped Out Ride” above and below it Back: Hill-Kitt 07-08

            • Upperclassmen “What the he**?!?” Apparently it's a part of the cheer that upperclassmen don't learn

            • that would alienate half the dorm

      • Voting

        • Preliminaries are canceled because one of the finalist designs ( Beverly Hill-Kitt) gets no votes. We move directly to the final voting round.

        • Final Votes:

          1. All Quiet—5

          2. Car--4

      • Our Hall Wear design is as follows:

        • Front: Hill-Kitt 07-08 Back Silhouette of Hill-Kitt with “All Quiet on the Western Front”

        • Adrian asks me to note for our letter to next year's hall council that we advise them not to hold a design contest, but to instead design the shirts themselves.

      • Discussion of semantics begins

        • Adrian wants Roman Numerals instead of Arabic ones

          • For clarity that would be MMVII—MMVIII instead of 07-08 or 2007—2008

          • I think that roman numerals might be too different. Even though I do like them

          • We are willing to do anything as long as it's classy

            • 07-08 is not classy

        • We begin to discuss how we want the Hall name displayed Hill-Kitt or Hilleboe-Kittlesby

      • At this point Potter intervenes and suggests that a few of us sketch various interpretations of the design and bring them to next week's meeting.

        • Suzi, Bryan, and the Erins (that would be Erin K .and Erin A.) volunteer to sketch

      • Adrian will email the design scans to be for the records (note: he has not as of this writing so there are no pictures in the minutes)

      • Bryan will be emailing people, getting a quote, and placing orders

    • Food for Finals

      • Committee plans to meet Monday at 4:30 pm. They will report next weel

  • New Business

    • HKHC Dinner

      • Since Adrian can barely remember our names (and I'll admit I sometimes forget who people are too) Potter want us to have dinner in a Buntrock Meeting room sometime

      • Potter will take care of the details and inform us about them at a later date. Hopefully he gives us some notice.

    • Parliamentary Procedure

      • Some of us like it, other people roll their eyes

      • Regardless of our decision on Parliamentary Procedure we will still vote on resolutions

      • Erin A. just wants things to move in a linear fashion, and if we can do that without Parliamentary Procedure great, but if not that is what it is for.

        • Erin K heartily agrees, it is hard enough to take notes as it is

      • Do we need to approve minutes?

      • We need to clearly state what we are voting on and discussing and wander less

  • Executive Reports:

    • Senate Report:

      • Fall Concert

        • Right now almost half of the Pause budget goes to fall concert with the rest of the budget covering everything else, including Lutefest they want to fix that

        • On top of that only 1/3 of the student body attended fall concert this year

        • Possible solutions include moving the concert to the Pause, canceling it altogether

      • Elections

        • Suggested course for the 2008 elections

        • Students will be able to get a sign for their door that tells Campaigns to leave them alone

        • Campaigns will also be limited to certain hours for doorknocking (9:30 am—10:00pm)

    • Presidential Report:

      • The Packers beat the Vikings, which Arian says proves that Wisconsin is better than Minnesota

        • Erin K says in response is The Milwaukee Brewers

          • Go Twins!

Not hours, not seconds, but MINUTES from 10-28-2007

MINUTES- October 28, 2007

Hill-Kitt Hall Council

Present: Adrian Swanson (President), Anna Sannes (Vice President), Kim Spitzfaden (Senator), Jessica Fields (Staff Liaison), Mike Potter (Advisor), Erin Armstrong (Hall Rep), Suzie Johnson (Corridor Rep), Andrew Watt (Corridor Rep), Mara Fink (Corridor Rep), Alan Richardson Hohn (Corridor Rep), Lisa York (Corridor Rep)

Absent: Erin Kelly (Recorder), Bryan Haimes (Treasurer), Hannah Adamson (Corridor Rep)

Chaos at the beginning (You may chose to ignore): Erin Armstrong went to go fetch our advisor because he’s kinda supposed to be there. Andrew called Alan, and then he magically showed up at the door. Cool. Jessica and Mike walked in late while Erin was still looking for Mike. Then she came back and all was well again.

MEETING CALLED TO ORDER

I. Constitution

a. Adrian briefly recapped the changes we made last time (see previous minutes for details).

b. It was approved unanimously. Swell.

II. Haunted Trail

a. Overall, it was a great success. Congrats to Lisa and the whole committee for putting on a spectacular event. Your hard work was much appreciated.

b. We decided that it would be a good idea to write a letter to next year’s council about how it went and give them ideas about what they could do to make it better.

i. Smaller groups would have made the scare more effective. Trail workers mentioned that they could only scare a few people out of the larger groups, and then the large group would laugh it off. Perhaps limit groups to three or four people.

ii. Lighting- Andrew pointed out that the committee set up some awesome scenes, but it was difficult to see some of it in the woods.

iii. Uh…don’t let workers get beat up. We like Andrew and Alan alive. Thanks.

iv. Maybe a little too much dead space- try to fill it in with a few more scares

v. Planted people (not in the ground- decoys) were effective. Just make sure they are on the same page as the scarers. Some decoys just went to the ground and waited to be killed…which is probably more weird than scary.

vi. Get people COMMITTED!!! “Maybes” make it difficult to plan. Our idea was to have a specific date that people have to sign up by. Possibly have a sheet they must turn in with a ‘yes’ or ‘no’ on it. Then, if we don’t have enough people we can branch out to other dorms.

III. For all events/activities/committees/whatnot: As advisor, Mike needs to be kept up to speed on what’s going on. Everything should be forwarded to him from committee meetings and all other relevant activities. Don’t forget about Adrian either. He’s our pres, a.k.a. “fearless leader,” and should be informed about what’s happenin’ yo.

IV. Hall Wear

a. As of two days ago, we didn’t have any submissions.

b. Jeska made awesome flyers, but the one she put on the door was taken down. L Mike will talk to custodians about that, and Jeska will print off more copies for around the dorm.

c. Another all-hall e-mail will be sent out to remind people of the deadline.

d. Anna and Erin A will make the most beautiful sign ever to hand on the board.

e. For actual production, we decided to go with Larson’s. Not only are they Ole-affiliated, but they will also match any price. Handy-dandy. Adrian will talk to Bryan about that.

V. For all posters etc.: There is a room in Ytterboe with all kinds of cool Hall Council supplies for that kind of thing. If the desk worker doesn’t have a key, just call an RA to unlock it.

VI. November Event – the 14th at 10:00- Blue Lounge

a. Erin, Anna, and Jeska led the room in sporadic cheers for the November event. YAY!

b. At the beginning of the year, we had mentioned doing something like a Thanksgiving dinner, a pie-eating contest, or a dance. Pie fellowship with a pie-eating contest was declared “pretty much the coolest idea” by Mike. A unanimous vote confirmed it as the November event. Mike and Adrian both cheated and voted too. Way to go, guys.

c. It will be co-ed. Duh, Adrian.

d. We had a conversation about cider…don’t ask.

e. Will there be a prize for the winner? Perhaps an engraved pie tin where we supply the 3M strips to hang it on the wall. We also considered making the contest an annual tradition. We could purchase a plaque and put the winner from each year on the plaque. Cool.

f. We can get the pies from Cub for a good price and decent size. Adrian will call them to check on the prices.

g. Staff will have one contest and residents (one from each hall/corridor) will have another. Then they can have a showdown. Mike will talk to the JC’s to explain how it’ll work.

h. We will use pudding pies with whipped cream for the contest but quality, yummy pies for the fellowship.

i. Andrew and Allen will get signs for pies on every floor, like one in each bathroom. They will also make a big sign at Ytterboe.

VII. Costume Contest- The staff would like Hall Council to give them $50 to help with prizes, food, and decoration for the costume contest on the 30th. Passed unanimously.

VIII. Adrian is going to change the format of the agenda, so if you have anything you would like discussed at next week’s meeting, just let him know ahead of time. Kim will be permanently on the schedule, but all other officer reports are unnecessary.

IX. Speaking of which…Kim’s report from the Senate

a. General Saba will be here on Tuesday at 7:00 in Boe Chapel. It’s bound to be interesting, so you should go.

b. The November 3rd football game (also Adrian’s birthday, by the way) is Carleton vs. St. Olaf, so there will be a bunch of interesting events set up for that. Be on the lookout.

c. Diwali is on November 10th, and it should also be really neat. Tickets go on sale November 1st.

d. SGA budget took a $17,000 cut this year because of the decline in enrollment. In the big picture, this really isn’t a big deal because the budget is still bigger than last year.

X. Larson took our ping-pong table. Mike will take care of it by the end of the week.

XI. Mike mentioned we should make the bulletin board a little more interesting. Jeska and Erin are going to set up a “Meet your Hall Council” section, and Mike will help. Jeska will contact Erin K to get a list (which she will forward to Mike and Adrian) of Hall Council members.

XII. Just a reminder: Got to blogspot.com to edit the blog. Name and password was given out.

…and then, we all headed on our separate paths, leading lives of joy and happiness because Hall Council keeps us relatively sane. ..and Alan took forever to move his chair back to the original position. The end.
